The island of Lokrum is located not far from the old city center of Dubrovnik. This green oasis hides a surprise - a tunnel hidden by the rocks, half covered by the sea, and the entrance to the lake inside the island called the Dead Sea. As you swim through the 20-meter-long tunnel, the sound of the waves moving through the tunnel echoes all around you. There are many legends associated with Lokrum that tell of the unfortunate fate that befell many owners of the island over the centuries. The Dead Sea often appears as the focal point of these legends, and when you see the terrifying entrance, you will understand why.
Your dive begins by anchoring at the entrance to the tunnel and, although there is no marine life in the Dead Sea (hence its name), diving through the tunnel you can see crabs, bream, and other diverse sea creatures. In addition to fish, you might notice the glimmer of some pearls on the seabed.
THE LEGEND OF THE IMPERIAL PEARLS.
After Maximilian, other Habsburgs came to the island. Once a woman with big black eyes and beautiful long hair, the Bavarian princess and Austrian empress Elizabeth. She wandered under the Lokrum sun, listened to the rustling of pine trees, immersed herself with a dreamy gaze in the transparent sea, and added something unusual to the beauty of the islet. Old age was destroying her pearls. Pearls, children of the sea, are renewed and rejuvenated in the sea. The empress lowered them into a creak and went on her endless travels with the intention of returning when the warm sea restored her pearl’s youth. But a dagger interrupted her travels. The pearls remained in the creak. The little island watches over them. During the day he hides them with the brightness of the sun and the shadow of the forest, at night he covers them with the silver of the moonlight and veils them with darkness. When uninvited people, even involuntarily, approach the creak, the sea becomes agitated and the foam protects the pearls.
